![]() ![]() You have to get the amps, stick size, and travel speed spot on.ĪGAIN, building trailers is dangerous business. Can 7018 stick burn through the square tubing you are using? YES. Which is stronger? My opinion, is 7018 stick. I assume you're talking 220 v stick welding or better? If you do it right, your slag will chip off beautifully and leave a nice looking weld pattern, with good penetration, and PLENTY of strength. Use a weave or circular or half moon pattern. Use these as a reference, NOT as final authority. Something in the order of 130 or 140 amps. for 1/8 stick you're going to have to run pretty hot. It BENDS before it BREAKS, and has a tensile strength of 70k psi. Whenever I want to make sure something STAYS together, I opt for 7018. You need to give a 110v machine all the help you can for big projects.įor Stick, I'd for sure go 7018. If I were building trailers with my 110v Hobart flux core, I'd plug the machine directly into my 20 amp outlet in the shop. Make sure if it's 110 v that you have a 20 amp outlet, not a 15 amp, and that you bring your work as close to the outlet as possible (or use a 10 g extention cord at the minimum) to get as much amperage to the machine as possible. If it's 220 v, you're in the middle of the usage envelope. If your machine is 110 v, you are going to push it to the limit on trailer building. Slow, deliberate, and even presentation of the wire to the work is the key. Try and manipulate the puddle, don't just plow through the joint. Take your time and make sure you get good penetration and your welds look respectable. Make sure you don't just pull the trigger and blow along the joints like a downhill racer or your welds will be about as strong as a screen door in a hurricane. Check your machine manual to see what it specs for max diameter wire. I have not seen your skill level, so I use that term "should" loosely. LOTS of smoke.įor your use, building trailers, anything. Choose the wire/amperage (and on some machines wire speed), pull the trigger and go. It really places a lot of emphasis on the machine.įlux core is simple. If you error in the setup, you're all of a sudden the WORST weldor in the world. The GAS SHIELDING in the MIG is nice, your welds will look "prettier" and once you have the machine set up right.RIGHT WIRE, RIGHT SPEED, RIGHT GAS FLOW, RIGHT AMPERAGE, you become the BEST weldor in the world. I own and use both a flux core, and a MIG. Well, first, Flux Core Wire welding is not the same as MIG welding, although some use MIG to describe any method where you "pull the trigger and wire is fed out of the end of the gun". If this is your first time, you may want to enlist some help from someone local that truly has built trailers before.ĭISCLAIMER: YOU MUST ASSUME THE LIABILITY FOR WHAT YOU BUILD. As someone mentioned, building trailers can be a dangerous business. ![]()
